Cancer progression in a patient undergoing chemotherapy treatment is an extremely complex phenomenon that affects many levels of human body organisation: the gene level, the cell level, the level of organs and organ formation. This generates a fast growing number of possible protocols for cancer chemotherapy. Given the limited human and financial resources for clinical trials, optimal protocols cannot be determined empirically. Instead, a formal and systematic methodology is necessary for suggesting promising drug schedules that will achieve certain objectives set by the clinician.
A Problem Solving Environment is a computational system that provides a complete and convenient set of high level tools for solving the problems from a specific domain. Researchers at The Robert Gordon University have used PSE to create The Oncology Workbench, the main components of which consist of the Treatment Editor, Results Viewer, Simulation & Optimisations Engines and Information Repository.
