Magnetic Gearbox
Researchers at the University of Strathclyde are developing a variable ratio magnetic gearbox which offers electric vehicles the prospects of a clutchless, continuously variable transmission, rather than the currently used fixed ratio transmission system. It will enhance the road performance of the vehicle in terms of top speed, cruising efficiency and gradient ability and offer an increased range due to maintaining the drive system at optimum efficiency independent of road speed. This type of gearing is ideal for Electric Vehicles and/or Hybrid Vehicles. Key Benefits
- Maximises efficiency in a simpler fashion than any other competing technology
- No lubrication requirement
- Offers advantages in terms of weight, serviceability and lifetime
- Free from frictional heat loss
- High torque density
- Overload protection
Applications
- Electric Vehicles
- Automotive
- Renewable Energy
- Marine
- Oil & Gas
