Game Localisation System Software (GLoSS)
Localisation has become an increasingly important step in the game development process and it is now imperative that the process be handled as efficiently as possible to help ensure game delivery is both on time and on budget. Currently, only the very largest game developers can afford to have their own localisation departments and accordingly most publishers manage the localisation process either by hiring professional translators or outsourcing to a specialised localisation company. Each situation poses several issues that have to be addressed:
• The exchange of localisable assets (usually text) between the developer and the translator.
• The extraction of the localised text returned by the translators, to create localised versions of original assets.
• The communication of contextual information related to the text to be translated so that a translation can be achieved accurately and efficiently.
GLoSS specifically addresses each of the above issues and is designed to:
• Help streamline and manage the localisation process for software products, and in particular, computer and video games.
• Provide users with seamless integration of the localisation system and a localisation repository into their existing development process; resulting in improved turnaround times for translations and easier language builds.
• Attach associated metadata (for example text, images, audio) to translatable resources to ensure the translations are accurate the first time and correct and consistent across the project.
• Reduce users hours spent on localisation bug tracking, thus increasing quality of localisations, resulting in better sales in different territories.
Key Benefits
- GLoSS provides the potential for reducing localisation costs and improving turn-around time, thus helping to maximise return on investment for computer game develops and publishers.
Applications
- This localisation management system will help streamline and manage the localisation process for software products, and in particular, computer and video games.
IP Status
A UK Patent (Ref: 0421297.3) has been applied for. Having now developed a functional GLoSS demonstrator, the University of Abertay Dundee is seeking partners for the further development and/or licensing of this technology.
