Centre for Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences
BIO is a multi-disciplinary department, comprising the divisions of Biochemistry, Microbiology, Nutrition and Physiology. Joint and interdisciplinary research is a growing area of activity, in areas which link life scientists, mathematicians and health care professionals. BIO is also a major producer of qualified health service technicians / scientists and dieticians in the West of Scotland. The underpinning of teaching by research is a core requirement, and the post genomics era will radically change the skill requirements and science understanding of healthcare professionals.
Cutting Edge Research
BIO has a well developed research culture, with areas covered including the control of smooth muscle function, epithelial transport, enzymatic regulation of peptide processing and novel regulatable connective tissue.
Other groups are currently working on the development of cancer including enzyme activation of carcinogens, environmental pollution, bacterial contamination, enteroviruses, bacterial taxonomy, and the properties of cereal starch.

Market Potential
Commercial development
Because much of the research of the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences is highly applied, concepts and developments emerge that have commercialisation potential and the school does all it can to support such developments. The following concepts have reached the spin-out stage of development.
Biopta - A novel tool for drug discovery.
Disinfectant Testing - Disinfectant antiviral efficacy testing
Temp-tell - A temperature sensor for determining the freshness of foods.
Glycologic - A novel carbohydrate based drug delivery systems.
